From opening a door to throwing a pitch, the shoulder plays a major role in various daily activities.

What most people call the shoulder is actually a composite of several joints that combine with ligaments, tendons and muscles to allow a wide range of motion in the arm. You use your shoulders everyday, but mobility doesn’t always come free - overuse or trauma in or around the shoulder can often cause pain and even loss of motion. Overuse may lead to increasing problems with joint instability, pinched nerves, or inflammation of muscle-tendons, while trauma may cause bone fractures, or injury to the soft tissues in your shoulder.

What are the symptoms of shoulder pain?

Shoulder pain and disorders involving the shoulder can cause a loss of motion, as well as difficulty in performing everyday activities, such as getting dressed or driving. For athletes, shoulder disorders can also negatively affect stability, mobility and speed. Please consult with your physician if you are feeling any symptoms.

What causes shoulder pain?

Most commonly, shoulder pain stems from overuse or trauma. Overuse may lead to increased joint instability, pinched nerves, or inflammation of the muscle-tendons. Trauma may cause bone fractures, or injury to the soft tissues in your shoulder, which often results in pain and loss of motion. Shoulder pain can also be caused by sports injuries, dislocation (through trauma or from genetics), arthritis, tumors, nerve compression, thoracic outlet syndrome, or idiopathic causes such as frozen shoulder.
